" M.s. rendering of the MeLa Ragamalika of MahaVaidyanatha Sivan, was a rare achievement. She was then 78. (1994).
The ragamalika comprises 72 maLa-kartha ragams in a single kriti. There is just a hair-breadth difference between raga and raga and the ragas had to be distinguished. The ragamalika was rich in sanskrit words. In her declining years, M.S. learned this complex composition ,studied it, and rendered it beautifully and flawlessly.
It seems that when the Paramacharya of Kanchi listened to this Ragamalika,
he exclaimed " As long as the Sun and Moon, abide in the sky, this Ragamalika will be remembered".
MSS learnt it long ago, and sang two chakras each year from 1968 to 1974 at her Music Academy Concert. It was the first time it came out as a full recording from her. Apart from the Academy, she has sung selected chakras in concerts at other venues.

True. I too have read about that. Full rendering of that single kriti would have taken one hour and evidently not suitable for a concert. That is why she sang it on different occasions, part by part. However, only the full kriti would do full justice. We can only wish that she had given the recording, as early as 1966, as is labelled in the release! .. Thank you, nevertheless for alerting.

Long back ( may be around 1970), Smt.MS had given an LP on National Integration ( There were 11 songs- Tamizh, Malayalam, Telegu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarathi, Bengali, Urdu ,Hindi and Sanskri and a punjabi song as well).
Later the same was re-issued as EP with ten songs. for Barathiya Vidya Bhavan.
Till last year, the wonderful songs could not be shared in public due to copyright issues.
Today, by chance, I found that all the ten songs in that release, have been placed in public domain by SAREGAMA. I cannot thank them enough.
Here are the links to those divine renderings.

Meaning:

People whom we see every day, God makes them disappear one day.

In two or four days, God changes the destiny of a man, and puts him from palace to prison.

A King who is rich and arrogant today, God makes him bear heavy burden the next day!

While you count, your life gets shorter and shorter in a fast pace and we die one day.

We were never together when we were born, and we will never be together when we die. Then why possess jealousy, enemity, etc and waste your life?

Sharing a nice article about Smt.MS concert
=============================
http://srutimag.blogspot.com/2016/01/re ... -debt.html
"
In 1976, a few friends interested in classical music started a cultural organization called Rasikapriya in Ernakulam, Kochi. I was the secretary and we arranged for several artists from all over India to come and perform in our sabha. The concerts were mostly held in the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Hall in Ernakulam. In 1981 we decided to celebrate Rasikapriya’s fifth anniversary in a grand manner. We came to know that M.S. Subbulakshmi was visiting Anandawadi Asram, Malakara town, near Kottayam, sometime in April. However, by that time MS had stopped accepting sabha concerts, except for the two earlier commitments which she was to honour.

As my uncle S.Y. Krishnaswamy, ICS, was a good friend of T. Sadasivam, I suggested that we make use of his good services to request MS to perform in our sabha on her return from the Asram. The proposal was approved.

So I made a trip to Chennai to meet MS and Sadasivam and was fortunate to get an appointment to meet them. I informed them about our sabha’s activities and the special occasion and requested him to agree for a performance by MS for our sabha’s fifth anniversary. He accepted without hesitation but told me we would have to arrange a few things and explained them to me in detail.

Ramajayam, a student at the Palghat Music Academy, was a talented young man. M.P. Nair, father of eleven children including Ramajayam, was a low paid employee in the local self-government department in Tamil Nadu and could not pay his fees. The compassionate principal of the college approached Sadasivam to help Ramajayam who moved to Chennai. He would play the tambura for MS and she knew that his family’s debt was growing. Nair had lost his job following a debilitating disease. He had pledged his Koduvayur homestead to get a loan of Rs. 4,000 from a co-operative bank in Koduvayur village, near Palghat. The debt had doubled in 15 years.

Sadasivam told me that the collection from the MS concert in our sabha should be used to redeem the debt incurred by Ramajayam’s father more than a decade ago. He also wanted me to visit the bank in Koduvayur on my way back to Kochi and collect the details of the exact amount to be paid till the date of the concert in order to totally clear the family debt. I was happy that things were working out this way and that we could have the concert by MS for our sabha’s fifth anniversary. The date for the concert was fixed for 27 April 1981.

As discussed, on my way back I went to Koduvayur and visited Nair’s house. He took me to the bank and we explained the matter to the manager who arrived at the exact figure including the loan amount and the total interest till the date of the concert. I informed the bank manager that the full payment would be made on the day of the concert by MS at the venue before the concert began. I also invited Nair so that the amount could be given to him. Both agreed to come.

It was a great feeling on 27 April when our invitees – the bank manager, Nair and T. Sadasivam – came on to the dais, and we presented the draft for the collected amount to Sadasivam who in turn handed it over to the bank manager in full settlement of the debt of the Ramajayam family.

S.M. Sivakumar (extreme R) with MS and Radha
We had arranged for MS and Sadasivam to stay in the house of T.L. Viswanatha Iyer, President of Rasikapriya (his wife Rajini is my cousin) in Ernakulam. All the accompanying artists were lodged in Woodlands Hotel. Earlier when I went to receive MS and Sadasivam at the railway station I requested them, with apprehension, to allow us to record the concert. To my pleasant surprise Sadasivam said ‘yes’ and I assured him that it would be only for the sabha’s records.

The concert went on for three hours and 45 minutes before a jam-packed audience which included many from nearby towns. Towards the end MS began to sing Maitreem bhajata, with which she usually ends her concerts, but suddenly stopped after the two words. She sang one more song and took up Maitreem bhajata after that. Later I came to know from her daughter Radha, that Sadasivam had signalled to MS to offer one more song before concluding the concert. That was enough for us to understand that Sadasivam was happy with all our arrangements.

I used to call on MS and Sadasivam whenever I visited Chennai and later was in touch with them after I moved to the metropolis. On every visit, MS and Sadasivam would make my daughter Sangeetha Sivakumar sing for them. They encouraged her and blessed her to sing well.

There were about 8 songs in SEVASADHANAM , the first film by Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi . All of them were hits and MS became a super singing star of Tamil Cinema. That was in 1938 and she was 22 then.
Sri.K.Subramanyam, the famous director ( he was the director for Thyagabhoomi-1937- a reformist- Independence movement film, a short novel by Kalki. Papanasam Sivan acted in the film as Sambu Sarma, a Gandhiyan. Smt D.K.PTTAMMAL sang her first film song - a nationalist poem, in the film).
The synopsis of the film story of Sevasdhanam in English and Thamizh are given in

and also some songs .

M.S.Amma Photos was noticed in a recent movie:-

Just a thought to share something that I felt very happy (A moment for a rasika especially a die hard rasika when coming across the celebrity person in real or in photo or somewhere pass-by). Such was a moment. I was watching this movie "Soorarai Pottru", am not sure what was the coincidence or the reason of usage in the movie, but there was a scene in a Udipi hotel in 2000s and the entire two minute scene focused on the camera angle where we can see photos of M.S.Amma on the walls of the hotel in a huge frame. One was where Amma plays her veena and the other where she was on the stage during UN Concert. Regardless of the critics (should/should not be) a moment for a die hard fan (me) to live that moment pausing the video and having a joyful tears to see her on screen in an unexpected moment. Did anyone else noticed too?

Note:- Not sure if I could share this here. If not appropriate admin could feel free to delete this post.

Wonderful post.
Would it be possible for you to kindly split the collection of DKP and MSS?
You can add the tamil songs thus split, in the 'we need more tamil songs' thread in general discussion. It is mostly for 78 rpm records .
You are invited to have a look at

@Cienu Dear Cienu,
I my association with the Parvathi blog I used to upload at Archive.org. I have discovered that they use a compression and storage technique that reduces audio quality noticeably.

I request you to use some other cloud portal. I strongly recommend either Youtube or SoundCloud. Both allow for very high quality uploads. Facebook does not allow for audio uploads but as we would in Youtube you can convert the audio into a video format and share via Facebook also.

They appear to be a single track, but are actually individual tracks. They are on archive.org FYI.
In any case, I have them as independent tracks - I can drop them in Google drive and share it with you.

In first pass i felt why is the great ms amma recording that is compressed and speeded just like a talkie movies from early 1930s being uploaded. Oh No Cienu i thought

But in second pass i felt ms amma is singing as brilliantly and open throated like say SG Kittappa , What a throw and fidelity with such sparkling brighas.

I am wondering if the mrudanga player played the dholak instead of mrudangam. I wish her later stock accompanist like TK Murthy played along with say VVS in this recording.

Dear Shankar,
I visited your wonderful blog last night. Yet to explore it fully.

A few requests.
1) In this section, there are threads meant for almost all the musicians whose 78 rpm records you are sharing.
I think, you have already grouped them and given the song titles . May I request you to post the link to the group of records in the thread for the respective musician? For example, DKP, MMI, MLV, CHEMBAI, MKT, MVI, and Dandapani Desikar? Needs much less work on your part. Just copy and paste the songs and links as they are in your blog post.

2) If this is part-2, what is the link for part-1, please?

3) May I suggest that your home page gives links to all your posts as an index? That would make it easier to reach individual posts.

4) I want to add my appreciation and follow your posts. Kindly give gmail option.

Intha Saukhya (Kapi) rendered by MS in the 78rpm has a quite a different flavour.
(not just that it is rendered in madhyama kalam, the sangathis too differ). Are there two versions- pre 1950 and post 1950? Cienu Sir, can you throw some light on this. Did MS also change to current prevailing version post 70"s.?.

Smt.MS had so many other dimensions. Early training and orientation to HM. ---- Thanks to her husband, she had the guidance of towering personalities like TKC, Rajaji, Kalki, ...Sadasivam was a great patriot and follower of Subramanya Siva , 1907. Tuticorin-Tirunelveli movement led by Tilak follower V OC Pillai. of Swadesi Steam Navigation company.
Sadasivam was a writer and singer himself. He was not rich when he met MS at Kumbaonam Mahamaham festival by chance as Congress volunteer selling Khadi in that exhibition - 1936 . MS was just 20 then. The freedom movement was red-hot then. And it was not safe to be a congress party worker in that decade when the party was under ban on and off. Many leaders like Jawahar were in jail.
Kalki and Sadasivam resigned from Vasan's Ananda Vikatan to get freedom to participate In the freedom movement.
Sadasivam and Smt.MS floated their own film production company and the voice of MS combined with guidance and administrative acumen of Sadasivam enabled them to gain ownership of the fabulous 'Kalki Gardens' mansion in 1941 itself. She had quit Film acting in 1940 .. She accepted the role of Sage Naradar to finance Kalki' magazine in 1941. Unlike SSVasan's Ananda Vikatan, Kalki was a political periodical. of Congress movement. with all its implications of ban by the British Government anytime.

MS had been trained by Apte, a famous Maharatti singer. early in life. Something in her voice at very young age of twelve ,somehow brought great teachers voluntarily on their behalf. The list is very long. and she added her own genius to what she learned from many of her teachers.
My father was a freedom fighter of those years and was in Bellary jail in 1942 Quit India movement. It was not all that pinic like stuff . One never knew what would happen in the jail.
My mother, same age as of MS used to narrate the emotional years of anxiety and pride combined. I could understand how MS woud have adored TS.
It is a loss that there were no chroniclers of those divine years at Kalki Gardens. No writer , can really do full justice to the deep emotional bond and perfect synchronism of their ideals in life.
His word was Law to her and TS lived for her..
Anandi knew MS intimately. but the second generation did not.
Their personal life and mutual regard and loyalty, can only be sensed by cultured minds. They rarely spoke about it.
How Chembai Swami regarded the music of Smt.MS is well known.
Her admirers form a long list of great personalities of the era.
Gandhiji, CR, Rajen Babu, Sarojini, Indira Devi, DKRoy, CVRaman, and ofcourse Jawahar.
Her real guru was Musiri. and her contemporaries like Althoor were also her admirers.
Others of her age, did not have that reach outside her state and realms, especially among HM legends. Perhaps, her genius was better suited to HM idiom. Sometimes, I regret that she had not opted for a career as HM musician.
She , along with Sri.Sadasivam are too towering personalities to be spoken lightly by little minds. Her life and mission were not stage-managed It was most naturally evolving. .

Here is a concert of the 70s where Smt. MSS is accompanied by with the next generation of hers - SrI Karaikudi Mani.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXakkr4KnTg

gnAnamosagarAda - the pallavi itself in the third sangati had the verve in the akAram where it returns back to pallavi line. Until her diaphragm allowed her to verve, she did, many times more impeccably than any of the betel chewing males that came about! Whether she rehearsed 1000 times is immaterial!

I am yet to hear the full concert. But the song list posted by Arunkumar Sridharan :

vAtApi - hamsadhwani - Adi - muthuswAmy dIkshitar
gnyAnamOsagarAdA - pUrvikalyANi - rUpakam - thyAgarAja
nI daya lEdani - dhanyAsi - rUpakam - Spencer vENugOpAl
indu EnagE gOvindA - mukhAri - mishra chApu - H.H. raghavEndra swAmi of Mantralayam
ikanainanA - pushpalatikA - Adi - tirupati nArAyaNaswAmy
gOpAlaka pAhimAm - rEvagupti - mishra chApu - swAti thiruNAL
kA vA vA - varALi - Adi - pApanAsam sivan
koniyADina nApai - kAmbhOji - Adi - vINai kuppaiyEr
tani
mAyammA - Ahiri - Adi - shyAma sAstry
RTP dharmavati - un darishanam kiDaikkumO naTarAja dayAnidhE - tishra tripuTa
kitanE dosh ginAoon - bhajan by indira dEvi
kallArkkum kaRRavarkum - chEnchuTi - rAmalingaswAmy
jagadOdhAraNa - kApi - Adi - purandaradAsa

Whoa! She is into all kinds of modern composers - after the customary start with a paddhati of gaNapati kriti and pURvikalyANi.
