Having gotten used to Smt. MSS's version of this song (in sAvErI?), it took some getting used to listening to the same lyrics in nIlAmbari, but Sri Nedunuri's silken voice helped it along...

This is not a tAlAttu song, is it? - so why did Sri Nedunuri use nIlAmbari here? For its 'dIna bhAva'?

Just caught up with the Atana krithi. Arabhi, Shanmughapriya, Surutti...Nedunuri favorites. I am surprised we haven't seen any Mayamalavagowlai....excepting Vidulaku, might you have any other reneditions? A manasA eTulOrtunE, perhaps? Dont mean to hurry you though....take your time, I still need to catch up on Neelambari...

MaheshS, that neelambari is mesmerising stuff...thanks a lot!

Nedunuri garu is quite a neelambari expert, his "sringaara lahari" rendition is supposed to be so good...i heard the same from malladis in a commercial recording, even they excelled.

Thanks MaheshS. The Malayamarutham was warm and refreshing in this severe winter here.
I was looking for a beautiful aalapana in this ragam. This is really a beautiful ragam neither
invoking sadness nor elation but that soothing feeling. Is Manasa-Etulorthune the only major kirtana
in MM? I don't find it to be a common raga in many concerts. Is it true?
Recently I was watching a telugu film in which Vishwanath and Srikanth were brothers. They are singers in thgat film. In one clip Srikanth sings 'enthani varnintunu o raamaa...." (just 1 line) in Malayamarutham. Is there any such
kirtana. I gooogled but nothing on it.

I've got the following in Malayamarutham apart from Manasa Yetulo.

Smarane ondhe - MLV, Santhanam
Dhanyudevvaro Dasarathe - DKJ
Hanumane - KVN
Sittranchiru - Ariyakudi
and a RTP by Lalgudi Jeyaraman.

MaheshS, thanks for the uploads.

Nedunuri garu also used to sing Smarane Ondhe beautifully. Could someone please upload if you have it? I had a tape containing an exquisite kripaya palaya in Charukeshi. Unfortunately, I can't find the tape. Looking around for a copy.

Also looking for two kritis sung by Sir that he used to sing earlier: Kasi Visalakshim in Poorvi Kalyani (this is also available in a Malladi brothers commercial release) and Kailasapate in kalyani by Mysore Sri. Vasudevacharya. This kriti is listed as begada at http://www.carnatica.net/newsletter/beg ... letter.htm. What is the correct raga for this song?

Finally, I learnt Parvatarajakumari in Sriranjani from him, but I haven't heard his concert version yet. An upload would be very welcome:).

But I have a bigger surprise for you.Just heard an unbelievable alapana (again same krithi though with LLG-UKS, this time).
It is so wonderful that , every other kharaharapriya will look stale for another month to me..until this effect wears out !!
Will get back shortly.

anjikinyAtakayya
How do you split this word ? I did not get the meaning of Anjikin..
Is it the result of Anjike Inyathakayya ?

Precisely. purandaradAsa used colloquialisms in his songs. No wonder they are so close to the masses.

Kji,
The kharaharapriya was delectable - thanks!
Sri Nedunuri sang a short version of sowmitri bhAgyamE in his Montreal Concert, (courtesy Prashant) where he starts from the pallavI, but in the elaborate version posted by Kji, it looks like he starts from the AP - this makes for a more dramatic and cogent rendering, actually.
I have a question for the officianados about this:
How much flexibility is afforded the performer to decide where to start the song - from the pallavI or from the anupalllavI? Most people render the Saint's aTANA composition from the AP, right? I realize that this practice maybe as old as the hills themselves, given that Purandara Dasa's gItam (lambOdhara) is also rendered from the AP/caraNam 1 (SrI gaNanAtha) rather than from the pallavI on.

The Purandaradasa song (is it appropriate to describe it as a devarnama?) sounds almost like kathaya kathaya that he sings in kalyani. Also, Coolkarni Sir, are you sure it is Ramabhadran Sir? It sounds different from his style. Kamalakar Rao Sir maybe?

This kalyANi tune is the same/very similar to kallu sakkare koLLirO and nambi keTTavarillavO, both purandaradAsara dEvaranAmas.

Your assessment is better than the labelling on my records- Any Day !

I am just now struggling with a few tracks I received recently, that were labelled wrongly -and to think that I had scooped up something rare....
Arghhhh..
03SAMBONA actually was GNB's Nannu Brova
02SITHANANTHA actually was GNB's Sudhamayee

At a concert in Toronto (late 80s possibly), Nedunuri reached the completion of Akhilandeswari - when UKS who was accompanying him said "koncham swaramum pAdungaLen" (please sing swaras), and Nedunuri immediately obliged with a great smile on his face.

One of those memorable moments indeed...

A thread on Nedunuri and no upload of Sahana yet? I don't know if this has been uploaded elsewhere, but here goes:

A huge, 13 minute alapana followed by a rendition of Raghupathe. The recording is fairly suboptimal quality but it's the one elaborate Sahana I have in this computer and I felt it was worth sharing, although towards the end of his alapana the recording gets a bit wonky. I however am surprised that he would have sung such an elaborate alapana that including violin went to 20+ minutes for just a 4 minute krithi without a neraval and swaraprastara. Some VERY novel prayogas in Sahana that almost appear to 'violate' the raga structure but I don't know. I loved this rendition.

(After four attempts with rapidshare, Uploadr, Store and SErve, finally managed to upload on sendspace)

<a href='http://www.sendspace.com/file/iao9us'>h ... /iao9us</a>

Enjoy.

A stellar Sanmukhapriya, followed by the Maharaja's magnificent Mamava Karunaya, my favourite composition in this Raga.

Jayaram, very nice vedio. Took me back to some 3 decades ago, when we use to sit in the front rows of Sheshadripuram Ramanavmi concerts in Bangalore and enjoy Nedunuri's Concerts. This venue has the unique distinction of holding carnatic concerts by almost all top musicians. MS also has given so many concerts in this venue.

Paalu Aaaraginchitimi- Saaramaina DivyaAnnamu Shadrasa maina bhojanamu. b....ra...ve...(that belching sound after full stomach). Double Sri for you too. Thanks a lot Sri Sri Jayaram.

You have given a fantastic touch to this thread with this vedio. We had so many of Sri Nedunuri's songs in this courtesy of the greatest rasikas like Prashant/Coolkarni Saab/Mahesh Avargal and others. The vedio link has a magic touch of increasing the number of visits to a thread in an impulsive way. Sri Voleti's thread jumped from 4k to 6.5k visits after the vedio.

hsuvarna-ji, thank you for the compliments. But I don't deserve them, certainly not the Sri Sri! I only inserted a link to the video here, the person who had uploaded the video deserves the praise.

Shri Nedunuri is a favorite of mine - besides being a fine musician he is a gentleman with a lot of grace. We can all learn a lot from him on how to conduct oneself in life.

My pranams to the maestro.

Thought I would revive this thread with some more music from the great vidvAn.

Here's a beautiful slOkA with amazingly original insights into kEdAragauLa, dhanyAsi, ranjani and sindhubhairavi. Our own Sharmaji provides excellent support on the violin. This piece is excerpted from Nedunuri Garu's concert in Buffalo during his 1980 US tour.

In the ID tag for this track, the composer is spelled/spelt as Kingaraja (instead of Lingaraja) Urs... :)
