This whole padavarNam, like numerous others, is a description of the message that the nAyikA sends to her chosen Lord thorugh her best friend. The nAyikA coaches her friend about the message that is to be delivered, where-in she describes her pitiable, love-lorn situation.

pallavi
unnai ninaindu uLLam pAghAi uruguginrAL iravu paghal mukundA

The nAyikA asks her friend (this becomes apparent when the pallavi is sung with the anupallavi) to pass this on to her Lord: "Oh krishNA (mukundA)! Lost in thoughts (ninaindu) of you (unnai) all through the day (pagal) and night (iravu), this nAyika's heart (uLLam) has melted and become tender (uruguginrAL), like treacle/sugar syrup (pAgAi)."

anupallavi
oru vazhi ariyAL enru sholli vA ennuyir tOzhi viraindu shenru vA

Oh bossom friend (uyir tOZhI) of mine (en)! Please go (Senru) to Him and tell him (enru Solli): "The nAyikA is unaware (ariyAL) of a (oru) path (vazhi) forward, (to be united with you)." Please make haste (viraindu Senru) and come back to me (vA).

muktAyi svara sAhityam
unadu nIla maNi vaNNa mEniyum ulaga vasIkara vENu gAnamum
manamOhana iLa naghai mati vadanamum EzhaiyAl marakkalAgumO

The message continues: " Can a destitute (EzhaiyAl) ever forget (marakkalAgumO) your (unadu) complexion (mEni) that is the color (vaNNa) of saphire (nIlamaNi), the divine music (gAnamum) from your flute (vENu) that enslaves (vaSikara) the world (ulaga), and the tiny (iLa) smile (nagai) that captures (mOhana) everyone's minds (mana), and your beautiful, moon-like (madi) face (vadanamum)?"

caraNa sAhityam
uLLam kallO kaNNA enru kEL unadu

The nAyika urges the friend to ask (kEL) him if (enru) his heart (uLLam) is made of stone (kallO).

caraNa svara sAhityam 1
kanjan nenjaip-piLandhu venjinam taNinda undan

She say, ask him: "Oh Lord, whose anger (venjinam) was alleviated (taNindu) by tearing apart (piLandu) the heart (nenjam) of the evil kaMsa (kanjan), (is your heart made of stone)?

caraNa svara sAhityam 2
naLLiravilE vem shiraiyilE jnAlamuyya avatAram sheida un

Oh Lord who incarnated (avatAram Seida) in a distressing (vem) prison (SiraiyilE) for the upliftment (uyya) of the universe (jnAlam) in the dead of the night (nalliravilE), (is your heart made of stone)?

caraNa svara sAhityam 3
Ayar kulam vandashOdaiyuDan nandan aghamum vizhiyum kuLira viLaiyAdina un

Oh Lord who came (vandu) to live among the cowherds (Ayar kulam) in gOkul, and whose antics (viLaiyADina) warmed (kuLira) the hearts (agamum) and the eyes (vizhiyum) of both yaSOdA (aSOdaiuDan) and nanda (nandan), (is your heart made of stone)?

caraNa svara sAhityam 4
vadana matiyaik karuvizhiyaik kuru naghaiyai ninaindu varunduvadai uNarndumirangilai un

Oh Lord, (is your heart made of stone) that you are not touched/moved to compassion (irangilai) even after being aware (uNarndum) of the plight of the nAyikA who is tortured (varunduvadai) by thoughts (ninaindu) of the moon (madiyai) that is your face (vadana), with dark (karu) eyes (vizhiyai), and a mischevious (kuru) smile (nagaiyai)?

caraNa svara sAhityam 5
draupadi mAnam kAtta udAran bhU bhAram tIrkka vanda dhIran
shrIpati rAdhA rukmiNi pati dIna sharaNyan karuNAnidhi un

Oh generous one (udAran) who protected (kAtta) the honor (mAnam) of draupadi in the kaurava court, the Lord (pati) of lakshmI (SrI), rAdhA and rukmiNi, who has appeared (vandu) in this world with the expess purpose of lightening (tIrkka) the burden (bhAram) borne by mother earth (bhU) Oh repository (nidhi) of compassion (karuNa), Oh refuge (SaraNyan) of the wretched (dIna), (is your heart made of stone)?

Are there any vocal renditions of this varNam available? Papanasam Sivan's pada varNams are of a very high standard musically...

Like Prashant, I too would like to listen to a rendering...with or without jatis...

Does anyone know if Sri Sivan composed this padavarNam for Smt. RDA?

Thanks, Lji:

That only has the first trikAla jati, the pallavi, and an extremely short 2nd jati. Is there a link to the full varNam? So there is a kalAkshEtra connection!

(BTW, is it me, or does the arudi feel more like vigorous gymnastic move, than a graceful punctuation?)
