Here you go. Lji - there is a small correction to one word in the caraNam that makes all the difference to the meaning.

pallavi
tAmadam tagAdayyA dayAparA tuNai murugayyA

Oh all merciful one (dayAparA), kArtikEya (murugayyA), my companion (tuNai)! Any further delay (tAmadam) is not appropriate (tAgAdu), my Lord (ayyA)

anupallavi
tAmasa guNa dInanAna tamiyEnai ALa taruNamidayyA (tAmadam tAgAdaiyyA….)

My Lord, (any further delay is inappropriate, for) this (idu) is the right moment (taruNam) for you to admit into your grace (ALa) a poor (dInanAna) and destitute (tamiyEnai) person of lowly (tAmasa) [1] character (guNa) like me.

caraNam
mAlum ayan kANA mahAdEvan maindA mAdu vaLLi dEvamAdu magizh kandA
vElum mayilum ennALum ennaik-kAkkavE vEgamAga vArum varam tArum (tAmadam tagAdaiyyA...)

Son (maindA) of the mighty Siva (mahAdEvan) whom vishNu (mAlum) and brahmA (ayan) were not able to 'see' (kANA) [2], Oh lord who has conquered his senses (kandA), in whom the lady (mAdu) vaLLi and dEvasEnA (dEvamAdu) delight in (magizh)! Please make haste (vEgamAgavE) and come (vArum) so that your spear (vElum) and peacock (mayilum) will always (ennALum) [3] protect (kAkkavE) me (ennai), and grant (tArum) the boons (varam) I desire. (Any further delay is inappropriate…)

FOOTNOTES
[1] tAmasa denotes all forms of base desires, instincts and qualities, like ignorance, mental slowness, lust, anger, pride etc.
[2] kANA – refers to the fact that vishNu as varAha and brahmA upon his swan were not able to determine the beginning (head) or end (feet) of Siva (as another example, Sri P. Sivan uses this very well in his vAcaspati kRti, in the same context to describe muruga's father: 'ari ayanum kANA ariya jOti')
[3] ennALum – every day

Suresh, no clue about etymology, but, AFAIK, tamiyan is a destitute person...

We find this word in several works, with its meaning as mentioned by you.

kambarAmAyaNam:
சக்கரத்தவன் எனத் தமியன் ஆயினான்

tiruppugazh:
தமியன் மிடியால் மயக்கம் உறுவோனே

shIvakacintAmaNi:
தேம்புடை அலங்கல் மார்பில் திருமகன் தமியன் ஆக

kandapurANam:
எள்ளலை யிழைத்து மேன்மை இழந்தனன் தமியன் குற்றம்

maNimEkalai:
தானே தமியன் வந்தனன் அளியன்

puRanAnURu:
தமியன் வந்த மூதிலாளன்

aganAnURu:
தணவா நெஞ்சமொடு தமியன் வந்து

தமியன் = தனித்திருப்பவன் lonely man [பெண்பால் தமியள்]
(Lifco Tamil/English Dictionary)

Etymologically
தமி = தனிமை solitude (Noun)
தமி = தனியாக்கு to make lonely (verb)

taruNamidayyA...

I could be totally off but somehow thought this to be idu-taruNam-ayyA - this-give-Lord as we use the word taruNam in everyday use...

With tamiyan as lonely person could the meaning change to asking for the tunai/company of the Lord?

CML, the last two posts made me look up the meaning in the lexicons from uchicago.edu, and here is what it says:
n. < id. 1. Solitary, lonely person; தனித்திருப்பவன். தானே தமியன் வந்தன னளியன் (மணி. 16, 58). 2. Destitute person; கதியற்றவன். தமியனேன் தனிமை தீர்த்தே (திருவாச. 5, 68).

In all the compositions that I am aware of 'tamiyan' is used from the point of a destitute, but I guess destitute would encompass a (spiritually) lonely person too. Solitary is not, in my mind a negative (probably because it is linked to the preference of solitude - not a situation someone needs to be brought out of), but lonely definitely is.

While it is plausible that tamiyEnai refers to the composer's lonliness, I do not think he is asking for murugA to be his companion/tuNai. He declares that murugA is his companion - therfore the delay in granting his desire is all the more impossible for him to bear.

And by the way, Smala - give is taraNum, not taruNam (so if you were right, it sould have been idu taraNum ayyA) - the interchanging of the position of the vowel sounds makes a world of difference! :)

rshankar,

taruNam = time, samayam. taruNamidayya is referring to the verb "aaLa". Which combined, means "to protect him , this is the right time". Also, the meaning for tuNai is not just companionship, it is as a guardian helper. We should not take the literal meaning of friend here. Does " Murugan tuNai " printed on many auspicious cards, etc., mean Murugan's association ? It means " basis, support, backing, blessing," etc..

Shankar
Your explanation is quite appropriate. I only teasedd the word etymologically.
There are deeper philosophical meanings in beautiful Mohanakalyani which is one of my favourite.

Now here is a comment on தமியன் in a lighter vein (just a joke :D
தமியன் = தமிழன் in colloquial Tamil (spoken around chennai :D ... just as
வாயப் பயம் for வாழைப் பழம்

Of course the innocent தமியன் is addressing the Tamil God Muruga only :D

No offence intended!
