I would like to start a thread about yet another forgotten vAggEyakAra - Mysore Karigiri Rao (1853 - 1927).
I hope this thread will trigger some discussion on compositions of Karigiri Rao!
Here is a rendition of nenaruncara vanajAksha by Veena Kinhal in a veena recital in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the year 1974.

(I have summarized below some info. about Mysore Karigiri Rao, based on a brief biography my Father Veena Raja Rao had sketched in his book "sangIta SAstra candrike")
Mysore Karigiri Rao (1853 - 1927) was an eminent vidwan in the Mysore palace during the times of cAmarAja ODeyar and nAlvaDi kRShNarAja ODeyar.
Born into a family of vedanta scholars, young Karigiri Rao also had become a scholar in vedanta and samskrta. However, without the knowledge of his Father, young Karigiri Rao had also trained in music under Vidwan Subba Rao, who was a close friend of his Father! It seems his Father did not forgive him for this act, and the two parted ways, only to be reunited during the final days of his Father Lakshminarasimhachar.
Karigiri Rao had traveled and performed in northern India, before settling down in Mysore as an Asthana Vidwan in the court of Chamaraja Wodeyar.
Karigiri Rao was known for his scholarship in vedanta, samskrita language and musicology. He was known to be an ardent researcher in the theoretical aspects of carnatic music. His two books in kannaDa language "sangIta subhOdini" and "gAnavidyA rahasya prakAshini" have been out of print for a long time.
It has been recorded that Karigiri Rao had composed many varNas and devaranAmas. Two of his compositions, nIve pAlincara (chakravaka) and nenarunchera (Mohana) are still performed by musicians of the Mysore school.
Karigiri Rao had amongst his disciples, such names as Bidaram Krishnappa, Chikka Ramarao and Gadwal's Anantha Shastry.

Dear Sreeni Rao, it is heartening to see a note on the legendary Mysore Karigiri Rao. My uncle used to have a collection of many of his compositions. Not sure if they still remain intact. It was a long time ago (three decades) that we ran into each other in Basavanagudi - you recognized me instantly and I was equally happy to meet you perchance (I'm the grandson of Vainika Praveena Venkata Rao). I read somewhere that you are now settled in the US. 'hope you are carrying further, the traditions, sangeetha sudha and samskaara of your legendary father!
