Hello everybody,
My name is Taylor and I am a musician/artist living in Richmond,VA. I am looking
to purchase a new mridangam, and was wondering if anyone in the
Rasikas community may have an instrument to sell, or know of anyone
who might. I have been studying for about a year now, and my guru
reccomended that I purchase a new instrument to further my progress.
The instrument that I am playing currently is of the kutchi type, and
is pitched around G. I am looking for another kutchi instrument
preferably, but not necessarily in the same pitch range. I will be
travelling to South India next January, but I don't want to wait until
then to purchase a new instrument (I think I am just to excited :)
). Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sir there are lot of travelling Indian percussion musicians currently in the USA. Generally we mridangam artistes would like to sell off the instrument before returning to india. You may also try to catch hold of some mridangist who would be willing to sell his instrument before returning. Most of us bring new instruments only.

Perhaps you may buy it from an existing mridangist who lives in the US or prob'ly our members can bring this to the attention of a visiting mridangam artist.

You feel so sure you'll get that good a mridhangam again after coming back? The makers should surely be commended for such consistency!

Akella Sharma said that one will have to try several bridges on one's violin before finding the ideal one. I thought the same could be case with mridangams also.

From the musician's point of view, the sale is part of the economics of the trip.

From the buyer's point of view, one has purchased an instrument which, if it has nicely survived the playing of a pro for several concerts without loosing any of it's black spot, will be a long-lasting instrument, nicely "warmed up" and made according to the standards demanded of the maker by a valued customer.

It should make for a good deal :)
