A great effort Cool :) Look forward to this. As you said Ramkriya and LJI can help in identifying the composers, translations etc. You may also include the Vachanas of Basavanna (presuming that they have not been sung in the post tani part of the concert)

I think it would be better if somebody could post the meanings of the above songs too. Let us learn/hear these beautiful compositions with their meanings.

This is a recording (bad quality) of "nA mADidha karma", in sahana (kannada song) by Chembai in a 1960s Bangalore Ramanavami. No idea of its composer, don't have the sahitya.

I have heard only this and a Krishna Nee Begane in the Kannada language from Chembai.

Yesterday Ranjani & Gayatri sang a kannada song in ranjani. The song was kAdiruvevu nAvu rAma. It is special in 3 ways

1. Sung before tani with elaborate alapana, nerval and swaras.
2. It is composition in kannada but not a dasara pada (Generally all kannada songs tend to be)
3. It is composied by Smt. Ambuja Krishnan. (Female composer's kritis feature very rarely in a concert)

http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... chool.html

They also sang Hari smaraNe mADo nirantara preceded by a ugabhoga in yamunakalyaNi.

Arasi,

Thanks for the correction. But I'm sure they sang in plural.

Anyway, please elaborate the second point.

Sri Madhava Rao and the undersigned were very close friends for the past 5 decades and we used to attend innumerable concerts together. Sri Madhava Rao will visit me at my house at least twice a week. We will be listening to my music collections at least for 2 hours.

He is scholar in Kannada and other languages and he is a very good singer also.

One day I have requested Sri Madhava Rao to sing some Dasar krithis and explain the meaning of the songs also.

As you all know that Smt.MLV has propagated lot of Dasar krithis. They were sung in the traditional Carnatic music ragas.

Sri Madhava Rao knows many of the traditional Dasar krithis. He devotes more time on tuning of many Dasar krithis which were not sung till now and compose the songs in more neo ragas such as Durga, Pahadi, Desh, Navarasakannada, Jonpuri etc.

I am giving the download links for a few songs sung by Sri Madhava Rao and giving the meaning of the songs.

Download links.

Thanks Nageswaran for all those links. And MLV has indeed given a large space in her repertoire for the Dasara padagalu and made them popular in her own meticulous way with perfection in diction and soulfulness in rendering.

Mother of MLV (Smt Lalithangi ?) had authored a CM Book which contained many Dasara padagalu.
"rAma manthrava japiso( jonpuri)" was one song which i remember having seen in this book. rasikas possessing this book( Lakshmanji ?) may kindly give more details of the contents of this book.

You will be adding another lovely name from TN, to this , at the end of this series

larger repertoire .... clearer diction .... :)

Coolji...couldnt help smiling at your presumptions. Yes, being a kannadiga, Dasa is close to my heart and the mind naturally tends to follow the path where there is perfection. But I refuse to be baited ;) though I still hanker after diction. It's terrible to hear the lovely lyrics otherwise. Manjunath has mentioned the gems...chandra chuda is steeped in bhakti and soulful lyrics..yes I know coolji...there I go again.May be I will come up half way to your bait...I did mention elsewhere that I had been to a performance in Toronto and at the end it only iterates that the bhakti and sway that makes the singing linger, is somewhere far more permanent than the grammar and technique we nail it for - though not for a moment am I discounting the absolute importance of these elements in the rendering.

Sri Madhava Rao gave a concert at Raga Sudha Hall in which he had sung only Dasar krithis.

Sri Madhava Rao gave an introductory talk on Dasar krithis which was very informative.

At the end of the concert, Late Sri S.V.Krishnan, Founder of the Raga Sudha gave a valedictory speech which was also very informative.

The down load link for the above two speeches are given below.

Coolji - my sincere apologies for the misunderstanding of your comment.

Lakshman and Nageswaran, thanks for that wealth of information...truly mind boggling. Lakshman, any idea where one could lay hands on MLVs book? Nageswaran, the links downloaded were indeed a treasure trove - sorry am not knowledgeable enough to comment on the technicalities

Aksharaji, Thank you for your post No.40.

Leave alone the technicalities. If you were able to know the meaning of the kannada lyrics it is ok. But if you don't know Kannada and can understand Tamil, you can appreciate the meaning of the songs as explained by Sri Madhava Rao.

The Dasar krithi where in each line, one one Avatharam is included of the various avatharams [the Dasavatharam] was fine.

And the Balaleelaigal of Krishna was captured excellently by Various Dasars.

In the Raga Sudha concert, the introductory speech by Sri Madhava Rao, wealth of informations was given.

Did you enjoy the Dasar krithis which were tuned in the neo Ragams by Sri Madhava Rao.

Nageswaran, I completely enjoyed every aspect of it - I am familiar with the language - I speak it. This only goes to show that there is a wealth to be explored, worked upon, innovated and rendered...many steps beyond the familiar realms. Am sure one of our senior musicians will do a second phase of rejuvenation....Many thanks for checking and enquiring on our understanding.
