Hello,

I am compiling a list of performing Carnatic musicians in the USA and Canada to publish on a website. If you know of any musicians that are missing from the following list

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=phVxHWHXHQkrLXXdyVwSNVw&hl=en

Please reply back to this thread with the musician's contact info, and I will add it to the list.

Thanks!

While the Bay area seems to be amply represented on the list, a couple of other areas are missing, like southern california and Detroit... a couple of pretty famous names are also missing... but I think its best to let individuals point out their own rather than giving out other people's names/contact info

edit: "Famous names" i.e. Trichy sankaran sir :P

Mr. Raghukumar, I don't know what your source was, but there are some major omissions. Except for a couple of names, your list is conspicuous by the absence of the well-known performers residing in NA. Here are some names that I can list off the top of my head:

Detroit area:

1. Madurai Sundar (vocal)
2. Kalpana Venkat (violin)
3. Jayashankar Balan (violin)
4. Srikanth Mallajosyula (violin)
5. Vinod Seetharaman (mridangam)
6. Rohan Krishnamurthy (mridangam)

East coast:

1. Kiranavali (vocal)
2. Radha Ramji (vocal)
3. B Balasubramaniam (vocal)
4. A Ananthakrishnan (violin)
5. Radhika Mani (violin)
6. Suresh Ramachandran (mridangam)
7. Rajna Swaminathan (mridangam)

I am sure there are many more artistes here than I have listed. I especially think that Southern California has some good artistes. Maybe someone from there can help you compile those names.

I don't have the contact info of any of the artistes above, but the good old google search should definitely yield positive results.

shashi has pointed it out correctly, the names i was referring to in my earlier post are the ones he is mentioning

Since he has already mentioned all of these vidwans, let me add one more name: Palghat Anand (A Ananthakrishnan's son and Raghu sir's grandson).

I dont want to get in trouble with my friends by mentioning all their names as well, so we will let the southern california musicians identify themselves (several are members of this forum).

Has anyone heard of Dr Balu Sekhar? He is a disciple of the late tanjAvUr S kalyANarAman and performs occasionally during the season, but it seems he has been rather quiescent lately. There was also a Ms sujA ShrInivAs (from HK???) who also used to perform but haven't heard of her in last decade.

Thanks for the responses! I did the best I could to look up the contact info, but I am still missing some emails and/or phone numbers for some of the artists listed above. If anyone from the Southern California region knows of any artists not on the list, please let me know! I will update the list immediately.

Thanks

Here is another musician from New Jersey - KALYANI RAMANI. Her email id is kalyaniramani@yahoo.com / veenavaani.us@gmail.com.

Kalyani has been a resident of NJ since 1995, performing / teaching at various places in the US. She runs a music school - VeeNA VaaNi - the website is www.veenavaani.com. She also was recognized as the Best Music Teacher in North America at the Cleveland Aradhana in 2004.

Kalyani learnt veena and vocal from her mother Prof R Subbalekshmi (retd. principal of the SwAti TirunAl Academy at Trivandrum). Her mother was a direct disciple of SSI for vocal music over 12 years and Sri K S Narayanaswamy for veena. A highly accomplished artiste herself (still performing on AIR/TV), Smt. Subbalekshmi is also the elder sister of Trivandrum Sri R Venkataraman, the well-known Vainika.

Dear Sri. Raghukumar,
I congragulate&COMMEND YOU FOR YOUR GREAT INITIATIVE! I am constantly in the situation of arranging accmpanists for many leading artits from India who visit North America; I live in Los Alamos, NM which was chosen by Oppeheimer MANHATTANProject( for making the first atom bomb!) for its REMOTNESS!.....Also I am a member of the Cleveland aradhana organising committee & we are MOST interested in locating& presenting artists who are already in North America. I do not pretend to either know who is around let alone claim to know how GOOD they are. As one who learnt Vocal, Flute, & Mridangam from leading vidvans for close to 10 years & decided being a scientist is EASIER I know that to get anywhere in Carnatic Music one has to be exceptional & that alone does not guarentee recognition

As Raghukumar has magnificiently taken the initiative I REQUESYT ANY ONE WHO FITS THIS CATEGORY to please get on hisLIST. I promise to check that list EVERY WEEK. In addition I encourage anyone interested to contact me at vkv43034@yahoo.com
