Bhajan in the Raag BHAIRAVI (sindhu Bhairavi of CM)

#1  Postby hariharan » 27 Dec 2010 20:28

Please listen to this Bhajan sung by Sri. Jayateerth Mevundi, in raag Bhairavi. The song is really very heart touching and vibrating, the way the singer had touched all 'extra' notes in the rag. I presume the composition is that of sant ' BrahmAnand'
The link and the lyrics are also given under.

Please furnish word by word meaning of this beautiful Bhajan and also correct for any errors in the Lyrics.

Jo bhajE hari ko sadA -Rag Bhairavi ( Equ. to Sindhu Bhairavi of CM)

jo bhaje hari ko sada so hi param pad pAyega ( or paavega ? )

deh kI mAla, tilak aur chAp nahi kis kAm kE
prem bhaktikE bina nahi nAth kE man bhAyega ( or bhAvega?)
so hi param pad payega.. jo bhaje hari kO sadA..

dilke darpan ko safaakar door kar abhimAn ko
khA kaho, guru ke kadamki tO prabhu mil jayein
so hi param pad payega.. jo bhaje hari kO sadA

chod duniya ke maje sab baiTkar ekant mein
dhyan dhar hari ke charan ka.phir janam nahi aavega
so hi param pad payega.. jo bhaje hari kO sadA

drida bharosa man mein karke jo japey Hari naam ko
kehta hain Brahmanand bheech samAyega
so hi param pad payega.. jo bhaje hari kO sadA

(Mevundi sings as 'pAyegA')

jO (who) bhajE (chants) hari ko sadA (always) sO hi (then) param (supreme) pad (state) pAvega (shall reach)

deha (body) kI mAlA (garland), tilak aur chAp (identity - stamp) nahi kis kAm kE (of no avail)
prEm (loving) bhaktikE (devotion) binA (without) nahi nAth (Lord) kE man (heart - mind) bhAyega (move, melt)
sO hi param pad pAvega.. jo bhaje hari kO sadA..

chOd (Leave) duniya (World) ke majE (enjoyments) sab (all) baiTkar (sitting down) ekant (alone) mein
dhyAn dhar (meditate) hari ka caraN kA (feet) phir (again) janam (birth) nahi Ayega (not come)
sO hi param pad pAvega.. jo bhaje hari kO sadA

dRdh (firm) bharOsA (faith - belief) man (mind) mein karke jO (who) japE (chants) hari nAm kO (names)
kehta hai (asserts) Brahmanand (supreme bliss) bIch (in) samAyega (enter - remain)
sO hi param pad pAyegA.. jO bhajE hari kO sadA

dil (heart) kE darpan (mirrot) ko safA kar (clean) dUr kar (remove) abhimAn (pride) kO
kA (what) kahO (shall say), guru kE kadamki (feet), tO (then) prabhu (Lord) mil jaygA (shall be reached)
sO hi param pad pAvega.. jo bhajE hari kO sadA

He who always chants hari's names, shall attain supreme state.

Of no avail, garland, tilak and identity of the body;
Bereft of loving devotion, you can't move His heart.

Leave aside all Worldly enjoyments; sitting alone,
Mediate on hari's feet; You shall not be subject to rebirth.

Having firm faith, he who chants hari's names,
(He) asserts - You shall enter into bhrahmAnanda.

Clean the mirror of Your heart, cast off pride,
What shall I say of the glory of guru's feet! then shall You reach the Lord.

What an insipid rendering by Mevundi as compared to the Master (Bhimsen Joshi)!

Thanks to vgovindan for the post. An excellent efforts to bring the apt meaning into one's heart. Cheers up. Mevundiji had gifted all those listeners of this bhajan with a 'superb' touch in all aspects of the raag Bhairavi.

Please also listen to this clip, the same song sung by Pt. Girish Chatterjee & Aditya Narayan Banerjee at a concert in Boston

hariharan,
If it is only the aspects of a rAga that is relevant, then a musician may as well sing a pallavi and need not take up a devotional song.

The tempo of singing and casualness only demonstrates that his musical talents are wasted - atleast that is how I look at it - there is absolutely no bhAva.

Thank you vgovindan Sir, for your views. But in my opinion, 'bhava' do exists in this song, may be not to the desired level of one's expectations, as the composition has high spiritual meaning and therefore, need more bhava for the singer to reach the contents into the mind of the listeners. It is true that the singer had given more priority to his music talents.

Bhajans singing is nothing but a prayer and not at all to show one's musical talents while singing. Bhajans are to be sung with a blend of high devotion, melody and bhava. Importance has to be given for the sahithya aspect too than to the a-z of the raga or theory. The Sruthi, Layam and talam comes out of one's rigorous practices and exposures, out of talents , whereas the Bhava is something unique and natural that flows out of the musician's mind/imagination, that too only when the musician is in deep involvement and dedication, during the performance.

Please correct me if I had gone wrong somewhere, in my above given views.
