TRS Mama's music has always fascinated me. His encyclopedic repertoire, solid patantaram imbibed from Musiri combined with his [for lack of a better word] 'unconventional' approach, and constantly amazing pallavi singing make him IMO one of the most fascinating vidwans to listen to especially for students of music. He's a great example of how to aesthetically and seamlessly integrate laya rigor into music.

His viruttam singing is also really exceptional. Hope to hear some clips of this great musician, especially some pallavis. Coolkarni Sir in another thread has posted his Bilahari RTP 'raghukula tilakuDai velasina rAmachandruDE mApAli dEvuDu sri' which was extremely enjoyable. Looking forward to more clips and discussion of Sri TRS's music.

In addition to the pallavi and viruttams, what i find enticing is the way he sings lesser known kritis and dasar padas, In fact I rate him as the finest exponent of dasar padas (based on whatever i have heard)
so here are three tracks in all the three categories.

I did enjoy the dasar padas. But my understanding of those pieces and the cultural background is very limited. I am not competent to comment on the excellence simply because I have not heard much. Pardon me!
On the other hand that RTP is out of this world. His technique appears novel and unique. I would love to hear more of the rare RTPs by TRS if you have more of it. Now it is up to you :D

Yes, Dr. Shrikaanth would be the ideal person to comment on the rendition of the dasar pada.

One thing I enjoy in TRS Sir's pallavis is that on the surface they are very artithmetically simple in construction - but he manages to extract every nuance from them in a very pleasing and aesthetic manner. The best part is that tALa is maintained in an effortless, nonchalant way with no thigh-beating.

Perhaps if Sri Mohan Santhanam is reading this, he can share with us more valuable insights on his Guru's music.

Please do share more as and when possible, Coolkarni
Sir.

Thanks for obliging. Shanmukapriya is most appropriate since we are now discussing MSS's Shanmukapriya at sangeetham. A true foil :D I have yet to listen TRS.

I do love dasar pada but let someone also post the lyrics. I have an allergy to listening to songs without the lyrics. Perhaps Lakshman can help!

Listened to the Ranjani RTP in more detail - Ranjani which is often dismissed as a 'scalar' raga takes on several new dimensions with this handling. Lots of unconventional piDis [which take supreme guts and confidence to execute as nonchalantly as he does!] and detailed exploration in three octaves. Easily the most unique Ranjani I have heard.

The sahAnA piece was very nice as well with usual engaging swarams from TRS Sir. Haven't heard the dAsar piece yet. I do have a rendition of upEndram AshrayAmi - lovely krithi.

Coolkarni Sir - how about a ghana rAgA RTP when you next upload? Perhaps tODi, kAmbhOji or bhairavi?

The pada discussions can wait for DRS. But we can go ahead with those magnificent TRS RTPs unless you want to take your holidays :D too!

I echo cmlover's thoughts. I am unfortunately yet to hear the Shanmukhapriya and the concurrent set of uploads due to some computer issues at home, but will catch up soon. Please do keep the RTP uploads coming at your convenience.
